At Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Rose Hall our environmental commitment is an integral part of advancing the resort’s goals and mission. 2017 afforded us the opportunity to play an active role in fostering a culture of environmental awareness amongst associates and community partners as well as managing the environmental impact of our hotel and its operations. As a reward for our efforts, we received the coveted Green Globe Certification for both properties by implementing various initiatives through the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Best 3 Green Initiatives:
Innovative or Interesting Community Programs
Our dedication to help and support the community encourages us to adopt a local school located approximately 45 minutes away from the resort. Through our partnership with the school, we established recycling programs in each classroom and throughout the school. We assisted the principal and teachers in forming an environmental club with responsibilities of improving the overall appearance of the school environment and making it litter-free. Our learning focus was on the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We installed recycling disposal bins and taught the children how to separate and properly dispose of their garbage. Today, we can boast of our school’s achievements in sustaining a healthy and clean surrounding free of garbage.
Green Team Initiatives
On property we are all ‘Green Guardians’. Each month lead Guardians from each department meet to discuss best practices and initiatives to tighten the grip on our environmental commitment. During 2017, the team executed several initiatives that drove awareness and accountability for commitment to our environment. We implemented a green audit program where each department’s environmental practices were audited and then awarded a red (non-compliant) or a green (compliant) ticket. Our housekeepers utilized their DIY skills and created two bins in one using the bin liners so all departments were able to separate plastics for recycling from other disposables. We have also installed a cardboard bailing machine on property which compresses cardboard and plastics for the country’s major recycling firm. All our compost waste is separated and collected by a local company – Caribshare, and then converted into bio-gas which in turn generates electrical power.
Any other story that highlights best practices
As a part of our drive to care for the environment, we are focused on protecting wildlife and protected species. Annually turtles choose our beautiful beaches to lay their eggs, once this is observed we ensure that the nesting sites are secured and cordoned off with proper signage informing our guests and associates of our commitment to protecting the turtles and fighting against turtle extinction. Our landscapers actively watch for these hatchlings and ensure that they disappear into the surfs. Through our Green Guardians, our Sea Turtle Protection program is widespread across our property as we sensitize all associates and get all involved.
